NURSERY PROFESSIONAL – MIMA, WA2/4/21

Weyerhaeuser’s Western Timberlands has an opening for a Nursery Professional with our Western Regeneration business. This full-time position will be based at our Mima Nursery in Olympia, WA. The site grows about 20 million conifer seedlings a year for internal and external reforestation customers. Western Regeneration is comprised of 4 nurseries and 4 seed orchards throughout Washington and Oregon.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide daily leadership and supervision of company and contract crews while performing nursery activities associated with seedling production – including transplanting, irrigation, growing, frost protection, lifting and packing, shipping, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate and role model company safety policies and safe work practices 
  • Follow and document reliable processes for safety, quality, production, and costs
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental rules and regulations
  • Understand seed and seedling quality specifications and leverage key points for seedling yield, cost, and performance
  • Effectively prioritize, plan, implement, and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines
  • Balance labor resources to ensure continuous improvement in safety, quality, production, and costs
  • Perform ‘crop walks’ to observe crop health and yield, as well as provide ongoing grower support
  • Assist with overseeing the maintenance of equipment and recognize innovative opportunities (i.e. precision farming and automation)
  • Ability to flow to work as needed to other projects within Western Regeneration

REQUIREMENTS:  

  • BS in Forestry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture or related fields or a minimum of 5 years nursery growing/production experience
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Flexible availability regarding work hours during seasonal production activities (may include nights, weekends, and overtime)
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position including working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and uneven working surfaces
  • Must possess driver’s license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment screening process, including drug screen
  • Live within 30 minutes of the facility

ASSETS:

  • Knowledge of pesticide use and application for seedling growing and protection, and ability to obtain Private Applicator License
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of tractors and any other nursery equipment
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish

Rexius Landscape Construction Division in Eugene, OR, seeks a team player with exceptional negotiating skills responsible for sourcing assigned categories of plants, shrubs and trees throughout the year while maintaining a proper and efficient inventory with company production goals in mind.

A strong horticultural and plant identification background with technical knowledge of landscape materials is required. Applicant should have a good industry network and solid relationships with qualified suppliers that provide a variety of quality material at value-added prices. TREE GROWER1/2/21

Location: Schwope Brothers Tree Farms West Coast
DCA Outdoor, Inc, is a national, vertically integrated green industry organization with two nurseries in Oregon. Schwope Brothers Tree Farms West Coast, occupying 500 acres, specializes in the production of high quality bareroot, flowering and fruit trees. Rio Verde specializes in evergreen shrubs and trees, occupying 300 container and field acres. We are looking for an experienced and driven Grower to manage tree production at both our Oregon sites. The right applicant for this role will have the skills to lead a team with a proactive, take-charge approach. Are you a forward thinker who likes the planning process? Do you have strong execution and follow up skills? Are you competitive in nature and strive to exceed goals? If yes, we want to hear from you!

Key responsibilities:

  1. Management- Work with area crew/section leaders to manage, produce and maintain overall plant quality according to the production plan.
  2. Inventory control – Ensure all growing areas maintain an accurate inventory through cycle counts and perform inventory audits, as necessary.
  3. Plant health – Develop a plant health compliance plan to implement with all area crew/section leaders.
  4. Production Plan – Work closely with the Production Manager to implement the production plan according to the sales plan and production schedules.
  5. Training – Train area Crew/Section Leaders to use growing space appropriately by developing a laydown plan per section and per bed to facilitate inventory counts.

Minimum Qualifications:
• 5+ years of experience managing bareroot and container nursery production
• College degree in horticulture preferred but not mandatory
