ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER

Moana Nursery in Canby, Oregon, is looking for a full-time Assistant Nursery Manager who will work directly with the General Manager. They will work in all areas of the 193-acre wholesale nursery, which has both container yard and field production. We have a parent company in Reno, Nevada, with three retail stores and a commercial/residential landscape division.

Duties:

  • Production planning, inventory
  • Herbicide applications in container yard and fields

Requirements:

  • A strong foundation in common sense
  • A strong knowledge of the ornamental nursery business

    Summary:

    Qualifications:

    Passionate about the nursery/landscape industry. Willing to take the business to the next generation, such as implementing new technology.

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) required, with emphasis in business administration and/or horticulture, greenhouse, or nursery management preferred.

    Experience

    Three to five years managerial experience at a horticulture business. Overall seven to ten years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

    Demonstrated progression in management of horticulture company preferred.

    Computer Skills

    Experience with Microsoft Office preferred. Able to manage company website and internet applications. We use Sage 100 for our accounting, inventory, and sales.

    HERBACEOUS GROWER

    We are looking for an experienced plant grower who has advanced herbaceous plant knowledge, excels with systems and processes, and can get things done.  If you are someone who flourishes in a fast-paced environment, pays attention to the details, and has strong follow up skills, this could be the job for you!

    KEY Responsibilities: 

    1. Manage Herbaceous program: The herbaceous plant grower works with area crew leaders and crew members to lead, manage, produce and maintain overall plant quality according to the production plan.
    2. Inventory Control: Ensure the herbaceous growing area maintains an accurate inventory through cycle counts and inventory audits, as necessary. Train area crew leaders to use growing space appropriately based on the production plan and plant cultural needs.
    3. Plant Health: Work closely with the IPM manager and production manager to ensure the best pest and disease control plan is in place.
    4. Production Plan: Work closely with herbaceous planning coordinator and production manager to implement production plan according to sales plan and production schedules.
    5. Training: Develop, schedule and conduct training for operational processes as deemed necessary.

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    • One year of Green Industry Operation related experience.
    • One year of management experience

    • Hands-on responsibility for the development and maintenance of all growing systems.
    • Formulates farm operation schedules, communicates schedules to supervisors and ensures optimum timely operations while meeting high standards of growing quality Blueberries in a safe and professional environment.
    • Provides leadership, direction, and oversight to team members. Delegates responsibility and achieves results through employees; maintains order in an environment of changing priorities.
    • Works directly with the CEO, Director of Operations and Leadership Team to ensure implementation of all regulatory compliance, including personal safety and food safety.
    • Provide direction and oversight for new planting development.
    • Assures effective communication between departments and key personnel. Provides ongoing and timely input to the CEO, Director of Operations and Leadership Team.

    Our ideal candidate must possess the following skills, experience and education:

    • A degree in agronomy or closely related field or a minimum of five years farm management experience

    IN-GROUND TREE PRODUCTION MANAGER

    Everde Growers is a leader within the horticulture industry with a true coast-to-coast footprint consisting of over 6,700 acres in production encompassing 14 farm locations throughout Texas, Florida, California, and Oregon. Our superior growing methods and pruning practices ensure consistent high quality and availability. Our inventory mix includes trees, shrubs, perennials, palms, grasses, succulents, tropicals, fruit, and many other items. We are seeking an In-Ground Tree Production Manager to join our team at our Forest Grove, Oregon location. In this role, you will be managing and overseeing In-Ground Production, managing field labor, and looking for ways to improve efficiency an productivity of the workforce. You’ll also be maintaining the quality of the product, and assuring safety standards are met, along with managing the budget.

    You will be able to:

    • Oversee production of fruit, flowering and ornamental trees i.e. peaches, nectarines, apple, pear, Japanese maples, etc)
    • Schedule propogation of rootstock, develop the master plan for scion/rootstock combinations and the budding process
    • Manage the field layout plan, develop in-ground production protocols and timelines, and make decisions around mechanical planting/harvesting equipment
    • Supervise budding/grafting teams
    • Monitor soil fertility, moisture, and weed control
    • Stay current with industry standards for grading, bundling and quality expectations
    • Be the source of knowledge of requirements for storing all genus of shade and fruit trees, and inventory management
    • Report all potting, scrap and consolidations
    • Oversee production, maintenance and harvest of all ornamental trees and shrubs
    • Collaborate with the Grower and Plant Health Manager to maintain healthy, clean plants and growing grounds
    • Assure all safety rules and practices are in place and are followed at all times
    • Monitor the irrigation system
    • Manage the work force, given weather conditions, equipment availability, necessity and seasonal limitations
    • Assure that labor budget requirements and benchmarks are met
    • Make suggestions about procedural and formula changes to improve product quality & timeliness
    • Implement a true BMP program
    • Maintain proper inventory of products needed, along with proper storage, use and control
    • Be available to work the needed shifts and hours to accomplish the needs, tasks and responsibilities for the department
    • Compile reports on personnel matters, i.e. absenteeism, labor costs, etc, for management, and approve time cards
    • Compile reports on safety issues and information

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree (B. A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university; OR 3-5 years’ related experience and/or training; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
    • Must have a current driver’s license.
    • Must maintain a Qualified Applicator License through the State.
    • Ability to communicate in English. Ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful but not mandatory.
    • Must have experience in bare root / in-ground young tree growing
    • Must have good organization and planning skills
    • Must be a self-starter, work well under pressure and able to multi task
    • Must be able to operate a computer using Windows-based programs to include but not limited to Excel, Word and Office. Ability to utilize computer and manage irrigation systems, Oracle software and others as needed.

    Production Coordinator

    A well established and respected wholesale bare root nursery in the Portland, OR metro area is seeking a Production Coordinator (PC) to work with our existing production farm and propagation managers. This would be a career position for the right candidate.

    The PC’s responsibilities would include:

    • Be intimately knowledgeable of and maintain our production schedule.
    • Coordinate the planning, buying (seed & seedlings), planting and growing of our nursery stock between our farms and propagation department.
    • Coordinate the harvest between farm managers and harvest crew leaders.
    • Facilitate the pesticide program for farm managers including purchasing.
    • Coordinate plant potting needs with container yard manager.
    • Coordinate all farming supplies with managers and procure.
    • Help finance manager with production budget items.
    • Help identify projects related to production for project manager.
    • Additional periodic duties as needs arise related to production of crops.

    Candidate should have a minimum of five years of hands on experience in nursery production as a crew leader or farm manager. Horticulture education is preferred, but not required if experience is sufficient. Computer skills of common office programs are a must. Self-starting and team player attitude is paramount.
